Google Consent Mode v2

Consent Mode v2 without a tag manager degree

Since March 2024 Google requires Consent Mode v2 to use Google Ads and Google Analytics audience features on EEA visitors. Cookiequiet sets the defaults to denied before any Google tag runs, updates them on every choice and fires a dataLayer event for Tag Manager. Free on every plan.

What the script does

With data-consent-mode="1" on the snippet, the first thing the script does is gtag('consent', 'default', …) with ad_storage, ad_user_data, ad_personalization, analytics_storage, functionality_storage and personalization_storage denied and security_storage granted. When the visitor chooses, gtag('consent', 'update', …) maps the categories: marketing to the three ad signals, analytics to analytics_storage, functional to functionality and personalization storage. Returning visitors get the update at once from the stored choice.

With Google Tag Manager

Load the Cookiequiet snippet before the GTM container. The script pushes a cq_consent event with cq_analytics, cq_marketing and cq_functional booleans on every choice; use it as a trigger for tags that must wait for consent, or let Consent Mode's built-in checks gate Google tags on their own.

Basic or advanced mode

Advanced Consent Mode lets Google tags load before consent and send cookieless pings; basic mode holds them until consent. Cookiequiet supports both: leave Google tags unmarked for advanced mode, or mark them with a category for basic mode.
